Covid Infection
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
Most people infected with the virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. However, some will become seriously ill and require medical attention. Older people and those with underlying medical conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, or cancer are more likely to develop serious illness. Anyone can get sick with COVID-19 and become seriously ill or die at any age.
Paxlovid is an antiviral pill that's used to treat COVID-19. It's most effective when taken within five days of the first symptoms of COVID-19. Here's some more information about Paxlovid:
-
How it works
Paxlovid is a combination of two drugs: nirmatrelvir and ritonavir. Nirmatrelvir prevents the COVID virus from making functional particles. Ritonavir boosts the levels of antiviral drugs in the body by slowing down the rate at which nirmatrelvir is metabolized in the liver.
-
Who it's for
Paxlovid is most effective for high-risk patients with acute COVID-19. There's limited data on its effectiveness for non-high risk patients
PEP
Post-exposure prophylaxis or more commonly known as PEP, is an emergency HIV prevention treatment which must be started within 72 hours of exposure.
PEP treatment course requires antiretroviral (ART) medication once daily for 28 days.
PEP is considered effective, but not 100% and further testing & prevention strategies are important as follow up.

Oseltamivir (TAMIFLU) is a prescription medicine used to treat influenza in people 2 weeks of age and older who have had flu symptoms for no more than 2 days. Oseltamivir may reduce severity of symptoms and reduce risk for hospitalization.
Duration of treatment:
Oseltamivir 75 mg capsule twice a day for five days.
HIV
HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus, is a virus that attacks the body's immune system, specifically the CD4+ T cells that help the body fight disease, making a person more vulnerable to other infections and diseases. It is spread by contact with certain bodily fluids of a person with HIV.
While there is no cure for HIV at this time, there are many medications proven to be effective in managing HIV called antiretrovirals (ART).
Medication continuity and consistency are essential to being undetectable and we can discuss what ART regimen is right for you.
PrEP
Pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, is designed for individuals who do not have HIV but are at greater risk of contracting it. Medication consistency is essential for PrEP to be effective.
